APP-86 Armor Piercing Projectile Pistol

The APP-86 Armor Piercing Projectile Pistol is the standard-issue military sidearm weapon of this era. Unlike most other firearms, this relies not on energy, but on solid projectiles.

Recognizing the faults of laser weaponry, the military made certain that projectile weapons were still made available in combat. Capitalizing on the failure of self-contained laser-based sidearm development, the Andra Corporation introduced the APP series as a contingency.

The APP-86 fires armor piercing flechette rounds, capable of penetrating standard armor suits and some vehicle plating, at high velocity. It excels as a backup weapon and in close combat scenarios. The rounds are equipped with fins which tear away upon impact with a target, causing laceration and shrapnel damage. The concussive force of the impact and transferred kinetic energy creates further damage.

Equipped with a seventeen round magazine, or the extended thirty-round alternative, the pistol is well-equipped to function both in the vacuum of space, on land, or even underwater. It's carbon fiber plating is rustproof, and it is resistant to all but the most extreme of conditions.

Like all projectile weapons, the APP-86 has a limited range and requires reloading frequently. It also has recoil, unlike laser-based firearms, which requires careful aim. In addition, the pistol is banned from use on starships and space-based installations, due to the potential for its ammunition to cause a catastrophic decompression event. Only by equipping modified ammunition can it be used safely in those environments.
